Sebelumnya, Hallstrom juga pernah menggarap film-film bagus seperti What's Eating Gilbert Grape 1993, Hachiko 2009, hingga Dear John 2010.Cerita berawal ketika keluarga kecil dari India harus menjadi korban ketegangan politik di negaranya. Hal tersebut membuat restoran mereka hancur serta sang ibu juga harus meregang nyawa. Sebagai kompensasi, pemerintah India memberi keluarga kecil tersebut program perlindungan ke beberapa saat tinggal di sana, sang ayah Om Puri merasa tidak berkembang jika membuka restoran di Inggris. Akhirnya, mereka memutuskan pindah ke Prancis melalui jalur darat. Namun sayang, mobil mereka mengalami kecelakaan. Beruntung, gadis cantik bernama Marguerite Charlotte Le Bon bersedia membantu menderek mobil mereka dan membawanya ke sebuah desa yang indah, Saint-Antonin. Kebaikan dari Marguerite menarik perhatian dari Hassan Manish Dayal, anak tertua serta koki terbaik menunggu mobil diperbaiki, sang ayah tertarik dengan sebuah bangunan tua untuk menjadikannya sebuah restoran. Perlu diketahui, bangunan tersebut berada tepat di depan sebuah restoran klasik dengan reputasi mentereng yang telah memiliki bintang satu Michelin. Restoran tersebut milik Madame Mallory Helen Mirren yang juga menjadi tempat kerja dari restoran keluarga India tersebut berdiri, persaingan tidak sehat antara sang ayah dan Madame Mallory terjadi. Keduanya saling menyabotase bahan makanan serta silih berganti mengganggu kenyamanan satu sama lain.
